· Bright Side — Inspiration. Creativity. Wonder.

These real-life stories show how simple, unexpected choices can completely transform someone’s day.

  • I nursed my baby in a restaurant. The manager said loudly, “This is a family establishment. Cover up or leave!” I left. Three weeks later I walked past the same restaurant. There was a sign in the window. My heart jumped when I read it because it said “Nursing mothers are always welcome here.” I went in. A young woman at the front recognized me immediately. She said she was the one who had written the sign. She’d been a server there for two years. She said she watched what happened that day and handed in her notice the same afternoon. The owner asked her why. She told him exactly what she’d seen. The manager was gone by the end of that week. She said she’d put the sign up herself on her first day back. I sat down and ordered lunch. Fed my baby at the table by the window. Three different people smiled at us.

  • When my mother passed away, there was a knock on the door. One of her client’s sons gave me an envelope of money. I was confused. He explained that, when his mother had passed, they were low on money. My mom helped pay for their airfare to get her kids home. She never told us about it. She wasn’t a rich woman. That’s when I knew the world had lost someone great.

  • Every morning, my neighbor would wheel his elderly mother onto the sidewalk and leave her sitting there in her wheelchair for hours at a time. On an unusually freezing afternoon, seeing her huddled under a thin blanket made my blood boil, and I was ready to call the police to report elder neglect. Fueled by anger, I marched outside to confront him face to face. As soon as I spoke up, his eyes welled with tears, and he gently explained that his mother suffered from advanced memory loss; sitting outside watching the street was the only thing that kept her calm and entertained. He was working round the clock on his laptop right inside the window to pay their bills, having dropped out of college to become her full time caregiver. Ashamed of my snap judgment, I organized a meeting with our block. Today, the neighbors take turns sitting with his mother outside, and together we set up a fund to help him finish his degree.

  • I was on a plane in Chicago going back to Los Angeles after visiting with family. As we were about to pull back from the terminal to take off, I checked my phone for messages one more time before turning it off. My mom had sent this message while the plane was loading, and I thought she was just saying goodbye. The message actually read that my dad had just suffered a medical emergency and was being rushed to the hospital. I panicked for a moment, and a flight attendant saw my face and asked me what was wrong, so I told her. Two minutes later, the captain came on the PA and said we were going back to the terminal for a moment so a passenger could go take care of her ill father. I was surprised and a little embarrassed. When I got up to get off the plane, people clapped and shouted out good wishes. I really love Chicago.

  • A quiet man in my apartment complex started receiving dozens of massive boxes every week, filling the hallway with chemical smells and loud midnight hammering. We were certain he was doing something strange or questionable and was going to blow up the building. I confronted him in the lobby and said I would call the police. White faced, he took me into his unit and showed me his workspace: he was handcrafting low cost prosthetic limbs on 3D printers for kids facing mobility challenges overseas, using his entire life savings after losing his own son in an accident.

  • My mother and I (7) were sitting in the parking lot getting ready to go inside to get my brother (5) a birthday present. This put-together man came up and tapped on her window, waving papers and talking frantically. My mom broke down in tears and gave him $20. It wasn’t until I was much older that I asked what that was. Turns out his wife was expecting a child and he had just been laid off. He was holding up past-due bills and an eviction notice. She gave him the only money she had to buy my brother a birthday present. Admittedly, I used to view that as selfish because we grew up with “nothing,” but this story makes me realize we grew up with her as a mother, which is everything.

  • One day I was driving home from work during a snowy and challenging day. I noticed a Domino’s delivery guy pulled over because of a flat tire. I don’t know what happened, but I just got out of my car and asked if he needed help. He seemed to not have the tools needed to solve the problem. It was cold, my hands were hurting and he didn’t speak any English. But in the back of my mind I’m thinking to myself “I didn’t do auto shop in high school for nothing.” Luckily we were right outside a car dealership. I went inside and asked if I could borrow some tools. I ended up changing his tire for him. He asked me if I needed payment and all I could say was “I hope that pizza is still warm for your customer,” shook his hand politely and drove away. I don’t know what happened, I just felt if I was in that situation I would really be grateful if someone were to help me.

  • I am 50 now, but when I was five or six years old, my school had a grandparents day. I had only met my grandmothers once when I was three. As a young child, I did not realize that grandparents day meant they were all going to visit in person. I remember feeling a bit left out as everyone excitedly greeted their visitors. However, there was one grandfather who included me alongside his granddaughter all day. He made sure I was part of the group and felt included during every activity. I have never forgotten that kindness.

  • I was traveling by air with my three year old son and my baby daughter. The flight was delayed, then we deplaned, boarded another aircraft, and headed to the hub airport for the second leg. My daughter started crying the minute we were in the air, and my son started getting upset because his sister was crying. The remarkable gentleman in the aisle seat took out a pad of paper and started drawing little animals and sketches to keep my son entertained. At the hub, he carried my bags while I carried two kids at full speed to make our connection. I never knew his name, but I have wished him well regularly over these last 40 years.

  • I got into a disagreement with my now wife, and rather than continue, I walked away. Called a taxi (before Uber and such). I was sitting at a gas station, looking pretty dejected, while waiting for a ride that might not come. I had $20 dollars on me, and it was a 30 mile ride one way. A man came up and asked what was wrong. Told him my plight, and he said, “I can give you a lift for $20.” I wouldn’t do that these days, but it was the 90’s and he was a good dude. Dropped me off at my front door, and everything worked out OK. Thanks for your kindness, Caleb.
