- I was in my 60s and still knitting long after my children grew up and my grandchildren moved away. At some point, I realized I was making more blankets than anyone in my family could possibly use. So I started taking them to a local shelter near my house. I asked what colors people liked and made each blanket a little different. I made about 40 over 2 years. I never met most of the people who received them, and I was fine with that. I liked knowing that while I sat there knitting, someone else was going to be all wrapped and cozy in what I was making.

- One of my students gave me an origami crane for my birthday. He was 10. He told me cranes were supposed to bring good luck and that he made one for me because I had been having a hard year. A very thoughtful young man. I put the crane on my desk. A few weeks later, it was falling apart and kinda unraveling, so he made me another one. He did the same thing for his fellow classmates who he thought were struggling. I still keep one of his cranes in my iPhone cover.

- I retired from the same job I had spent 30 years doing. I was miserable for the first few months because I suddenly had no idea what to do with myself. Too much time on my hands and not much to do. My daughter signed me up for a pottery class. I hesitated but eventually went. Made a awful, funny-looking bowl and made the whole class laugh. I myself laughed like that after a long, long time. That was a year ago. My house is now full of crooked bowls, cups and plates. I give most of them away as random gifts. I also add a personalized handwritten note. My daughter says I seem more like myself now than I did when she was growing up. She might be right.

My MIL assembled this from thrift store jewelry & brooches she’s collected over the years.
- Every winter, my grandfather disappeared into his workshop for hours. We knew he was making something, but he never told us what. At Christmas, he gave each of us a carved wooden piece. Mine was a small capybara because I had been obsessed with them that year. My cousins got different things based on whatever they liked. It was adorable that he not only paid attention to our likes, but he also spent days making us those gifts. After he passed, we found unfinished pieces in his workshop and failed pieces he discarded. We divided them among ourselves. I have kept them all on my fireplace. It makes no sense I know but they make me feel safe.

- Someone left homemade jam on my porch. No note. No name. Just a jar sitting there in the morning. I eventually found out it was my neighbor. She grew more fruit than she could use. She liked making jam, so she started giving it away. I asked why she didn’t knock. She said, “I like making it. You people eating it is a bonus.
