Microsoft Surface Duo 2 Gets Its Final Software Update

Microsoft released the dual-screen Android smartphone Surface Duo 2 on October 21, 2021, as a successor to the original Surface Duo for $1,499. The device came with Android 11, and the company promised to provide security support via software updates for a minimum of three years after the device’s release date.

With the requisite three-year term coming to an end, the Surface Duo 2 received its final software update on October 8, 2024. This update, which is around 54MB in size, improves the device’s performance and stability but does not add any new features.

It is expected to be the last update, as support for the device is scheduled to end on October 21, 2024. After this date, Surface Duo 2 will no longer receive free software updates, security fixes, or technical support. Since its release, the smartphone has received only one major Android OS update, which was Android 12L in 2022, optimized for large-screen devices like foldable and dual-screen smartphones.

While Microsoft has not officially announced the end of the Surface Duo product line-up, there are no indications that the company plans to develop a new range or revive the existing one with future Android phone hardware.

For those unaware, the Surface Duo 2, a part of Microsoft’s experimental Surface product range, was a dual-screen Android smartphone designed to offer productivity-focused experiences. It had a unique book-style design with two screens and no outer display. Despite being innovative in design, the device was met with negative reviews due to its high pricing. It also faced challenges in execution, mainly due to its limited software support, camera quality, and performance issues.
