WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Every Thanksgiving, families across the country gather around their televisions to watch the nation’s biggest parade. However, those towering balloons wouldn’t soar in the sky without help from one small Kansas town.

Messer, an industrial gas company in Otis, has been responsible for filling up the giant balloons with helium since the 90s.

Workers load the trucks and drive 24 hours to deliver the gas to New York City just in time for the big day.

“Really, it’s just a sense of pride for the staff and everybody that worked the facility,” zone production manager D.J. Henderson said. “My office administrator has been at our facility for over 42 years, so she’s been involved in it a lot over the years. She even made the trip up there.”

He says Macy’s is a relatively small customer of the company, but it’s a really cool project to be a part of.

The 99th annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade takes place on Thursday in New York City. The event airs on KSN at 8:30 a.m. and reruns at 2 p.m.
