NEW YORK (PIX11) – It’s a year of firsts in New York City, with the first day of the new year and a new mayor. Mayor Zohran Mamdani was sworn in on Thursday.

In doing so, Mayor Mamdani becomes the city’s chief executive officer and the head of more than 40 city agencies, and is running the biggest city in the United States.

Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist, takes the reins from former Mayor Eric Adams and aims to deliver on his campaign promises.

Some of his campaign ideas included taxing the rich, free bus rides, and free child care.

“Beginning today, we will govern expansively and audaciously. We may not always succeed, but never will we be accused of lacking the courage to try,” Mamdani told a cheering crowd. “To those who insist that the era of big government is over, hear me when I say this: No longer will City Hall hesitate to use its power to improve New Yorkers’ lives.”

In becoming the new mayor, Mamdani is expected to receive an annual salary of $258,750, according to open data sources.

Before taxes, that is approximately:

  • $21,562.50 monthly
  • $4,975 weekly
  • $708.90 per day

Mamdani, a former state assemblymember from Queens, previously earned an annual salary of $142,000, according to the data.
