The Danube is carrying a flood wave across Hungary. The river already reached its peak in Kismaros, a village north of Budapest, on September 20. RFE/RL traveled by boat with a local man to reach his flooded house and garden. A large flood-prevention scheme was planned just upstream from Kismaros in 1977, but Hungary's last communist government abandoned the project due to environmental concerns.
