It’s Thor’s Day and you know what that means: It’s time to answer yesterday’s riddle. Every Wordle Wednesday I hand out a riddle, brain-teaser or logic puzzle for you fine puzzle solving folk to solve before we tackle the Wordle. Then on Thursday, I give you the answer.
Yesterday’s was tricky:
We deck our halls with it and dye our linens. But should it come creeping up the cobbles we scrub it out fast as we can. When it blooms beneath our skin, we bleed it out. And when we, together all, find that our reach has exceeded our grasp, we cut it down, we stamp it out, we spread ourselves atop it and smother it beneath our bellies, but it comes back… What is it?
This is taken from a really terrific monologue by the lovely and talented Alicia Vikander in the David Lowery film, The Green Knight, which I loved (except for the CGI fox). The rest of that speech goes like this:
Green is what is left when ardor fades, when passion dies, when we die too. When you go, your footprints will fill with grass. Moss shall cover your tombstone, and as the sun rises, green shall spread over all, in all its shades and hues. This verdigris will overtake your swords and your coins and your battlements and, try as you might, all you hold dear will succumb to it. Your skin, your bones. Your virtue.
Verdigris. Now that’s a $10 word, if ever I’ve heard one. The answer to the riddle, however, is green.

Wordle Analysis
I screwed up today. I guessed BRAIL to begin, which I thought was a pretty unique choice, and that left me with a green ‘A’ and 105 remaining solutions. Not too shabby. Then I stupidly chose “all new letters” for my next guess, but accidentally used ‘L’ a second time. In the immortal words of Homer Simpson: “Doh!” DEATH was a better guess, leaving me with just one possible solution: THANK for the win! Thank you! Thank goodness!

I get o points for guessing in four and -1 for losing to the Wordle Bot, who guessed in three. C’est la vie!
How To Play Competitive Wordle
- Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
- If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
- Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.

Today’s Wordle Etymology
The word "thank" comes from the Old English word "þanc" (pronounced "thanc"), which meant “thought, gratitude.” This word in turn has roots in the Proto-Germanic "þankō", meaning “thought” or “gratitude.” The concept behind this is tied to the idea of thinking well of someone for something they’ve done, reflecting a mental acknowledgement or appreciation.
The word "thank" is also closely related to similar words in other Germanic languages, such as:
- Old High German "dank" (meaning “thought, gratitude”),
- Dutch "dank" (meaning “thanks”),
- German "danken" (meaning “to thank”).
