Don’t let the guard down!

Already Jammu and Kashmir is dealing with the problem of illegal immigrants from Myanmar, popularly known as Rohingyas, and now the detention of 21 suspected immigrants from Bangladesh has opened up the Pandora’s box, indicating that the problem still persists with people entering the Union Territory for different reasons.

Reportedly, 21 suspected Bangladeshi nationals, including three women and seven children, have been detained in Ramban during routine checking. They failed to produce any valid identity or travel documents to establish their legal stay in the country. The interrogation of these individuals will further clarify the position, but what is more important is the fact that such a large group reached Ramban without any checking or questioning. This has highlighted the need for stronger vigilance against the entry of such entities into Jammu and Kashmir.

The preliminary reports have averred that the group had allegedly entered India through Assam, reached Jammu by train, and was travelling towards the Kashmir Valley in search of work when they were intercepted by police during routine checking. It is good that the cops at Ramban stopped and asked for the identity of this group because, had they not shown responsible behaviour, these illegal immigrants would have reached their destination.

Though the exact details of the intentions of these people have not been explained as the probe is still underway, the detention of illegal immigrants in itself is crucial for a sensitive region like Jammu and Kashmir. What is important to note in this episode is that railway services could be misused for entering the Union Territory illegally.

It is a known fact that the population of Rohingyas present in J&K has been involved in many illegal activities, and therefore it is the need of the hour that no illegal immigrant from any country should be allowed to enter the region. The administration has already detained many illegal immigrants in a detention centre because they posed a threat to law and order, making it important to prevent more illegal immigrants from entering the UT.

This case in Ramban serves as a timely reminder that security agencies, particularly the police and railway authorities, must remain alert at railway stations and other transit points, including Lakhanpur. Illegal immigration is not merely an issue of unlawful entry; it can give rise to several challenges related to security, law and order, and public welfare.

More importantly, in a sensitive region like Jammu and Kashmir, where security has always remained a priority, any lapse in monitoring the movement of suspicious persons can be exploited by anti-national elements and terrorist networks. These people could also be involved in narcotics smuggling, which is a major challenge. It is therefore necessary that the authorities should strengthen surveillance at all entry points of the Union Territory.
