Cracking down on encroachment
by Northlines · NorthlinesIn Jammu and Kashmir, encroachment of government land has remained a crucial challenge for the authorities despite a number of anti-encroachment drives being carried out consistently.
It is pertinent to mention that land owned by the government is not a personal asset of any individual; rather, it is meant for the collective welfare of the people through its use in development initiatives. The people usurping such land chunks are not only snatching away the rights of common people but also violating the law of the land disregarding established rules and institutions.
Considering this critical situation across J&K in context with large scale encroachments, strict action against encroachers is the need of the hour to send a clear message among all that the government will not tolerate illegal encroachment of its assets by anyone.
In this regard, the anti-encroachment drive carried out by the Samba District Administration in collaboration with police in the Bela Manohar area is a befitting measure to teach the defaulter a lesson and deter others from emulating such unauthorized actions.
Reportedly, the anti-encroachment team of district administration along with the police has demolished an illegal structure allegedly raised on government land by an individual involved in a narcotics-related case. This operation, carried out following all legal procedures has once again showcased the administration’s commitment to safeguarding public property and enforcing the rule of law.
Such decisive actions can effectively deter others from attempting similar illegal activities. When encroachers believe that violations will invite strict consequences, the tendency to grab government land can be effectively reduced. At the same time, enforcement must remain transparent, fair and free from any discrimination so that every violator, irrespective of social status, influence or background, faces the same legal action. The encroachment of government land is an archaic problem in J&K and therefore such actions are imperative to contain the issue once and for all.
It is advisable that such measures must be sustained through regular monitoring, timely identification of illegal occupations and coordinated action by revenue authorities and law enforcement agencies. Such drives should also be carried out in other districts of the Union Territory as the problem is widespread and concerted efforts are needed to end the menace.
Besides, it is also important to set accountability to make the officials act responsibly and contain corruption in the system, which is also a reason behind large scale encroachments in the region.
