Handle with care

It is disturbing that many soldiers on duty have lost their lives due to accidental discharge of their weapons, as one comes across a number of news reports regarding such tragedies after searching the topic on the internet. In this context, one more death of an Army soldier in the Akhnoor sector due to accidental fire while he was on operational duty at the forward Jogwan area of Khour on Sunday has once again highlighted the need for preventing such avoidable deaths. India cannot afford to lose its valiant soldiers in such incidents.

It is unfortunate that soldiers trained to handle weapons skillfully are losing their lives due to mishandling. The jawans are rigorously trained to combat adversaries using their weapons, but deaths due to accidental firing incidents have exposed gaps that must be plugged to minimise such tragedies in the future.

It is important to note that incidents of accidental firing not only cost precious lives but also demoralise fellow soldiers and devastate families who wait for months for their sons and daughters, husbands and wives, and brothers and sisters to return home safely.

Over the years, Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed several cases where security personnel have lost their lives or suffered serious injuries due to accidental firing during weapon handling or while cleaning their service rifles. The situation is serious and calls for procedural changes to save the lives of soldiers.

The need of the hour is to follow the existing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) without any compromise. Those at the helm should revisit the SOPs to assess whether they are sufficient or whether there is a need to introduce more practical and effective safety measures.

Soldiers handling weapons must always remember that weapon safety can never be taken for granted. There is a pressing need for security forces to review their existing protocols, strengthen training, and introduce improved SOPs that minimise human error and ensure every weapon is handled with the highest level of caution.

It is time for the security forces to address this issue with utmost sincerity and urgency to prevent such deaths in the future. The lives of soldiers are invaluable, and every possible step must be taken to avoid any preventable loss among all ranks of the security forces. The nation cannot afford such repeated losses, as the role of the security forces remains crucial in safeguarding the borders and maintaining law and order in the hinterland.
