J&K: 1st-Ever Food Grain Freight Train Reaches Anantnag
by Northlines · NorthlinesSRINAGAR, Dec 21: In a major boost to food security and logistics in Kashmir, the first-ever food grain freight train of the Food Corporation of India (FCI) arrived at the Anantnag Goods Terminal on Sunday.
Depot Manager, FCI Kashmir, K L Mina said the train, which originated from Punjab, carried around 1,384 tonnes of food grains in 21 wagons.
He said 21 wagons have arrived so far, while another 42 wagons are expected shortly. “Around 1,300 metric tonnes of rice arrived today. The remaining 42 wagons will carry about 2,600 metric tonnes of rice, which is equivalent to nearly 110 truckloads,” Mina said.
He added that earlier, transportation of food grains from Punjab took considerably more time, but rail connectivity will now save both time and resources, benefiting the overall supply system.
The arrival of the freight train marks a significant step in strengthening the food supply chain to the Valley, he said. (KNO)
