A MAJOR search on Wednesday evening after a report of a person in the water was called off after it was deemed to be a false alarm.
The multi-agency operation off La Braye that saw lifeboats, drones and thermal imaging technology deployed began at 9.45pm and called off shortly after 11pm.
The group searched the waters south of Rocco Tower, the shallow reefs between there and Corbière Lighthouse, and north of the tower.
But there were no signs of anyone in the water so not long after 11pm the search operation was called off.
The Jersey Lifeboat Association said that the call was made with good intent and urged Islanders never to hesitate to report.
It said: “If you believe you see someone in the water or in difficulty around our coastline, don’t hesitate—call 999 immediately and ask for the Coastguard.
“We’d always rather respond to a call made in good faith than risk someone not receiving help when they need it.”
