ST Clement parishioners recently visited Cancale in France to take part in its biennial carnival celebrations and reaffirm the twinning links with the fishing town.

St Clement Constable Marcus Troy led the 17-strong group who travelled to Brittany following an invitation to participate in the carnival – a popular event which winds its way through the streets of Cancale.

This year’s event was dubbed Entre Terre et Mer (Between Land and Sea) and provided the opportunity for the St Clement group to showcase Jersey’s maritime heritage.

The ladies dressed as traditional Jersey maids, complete with handcrafted bonnets specially created for the occasion, while the men took on the role of traditional fishermen.

The parish’s carnival entry featured a vehicle decorated with fishing nets, flags, oars, lobster pots, a large lobster and a buoy, reflecting the strong seafaring connections shared by Jersey and Cancale.

A basket of Jersey Royals also formed part of the display, offering a taste of the Island’s most famous export.

During the visit, the group was also met Cancale’s newly elected mayor, Marcel Le Moal.
