WORKS to stabilise Gorey Pier have commenced as Ports of Jersey looks to ensure the long-term integrity of the “historical structure”.
The project includes work by Jersey Demolition Contractors to remove the pier’s deteriorating landing stage, which has been closed for several years.
The closure followed the discovery of “significant” structural deterioration.
A planning application seeking permission for the removal of the upper deck and support pillars was approved earlier this year.
Additionally, temporary support bracing will be installed from the lower deck to the original pier structure.
Harbourmaster Captain Bill Sadler noted that “this first part of the project is really important – stabilise the pier, make it safe”.
“That would make sure that the public can get back onto the end of the pier again,” he continued.
“It is a really important project in terms of protecting this historical structure.”
Jersey Demolition Contractors director of operations Doc Snook said: “We’ve done a couple of community engagements, mostly with the Gorey Boat Owners Association to talk through the project.”
The works started last month.
