THE JSPCA has launched an appeal to find a new home after announcing plans to leave its St Saviour’s Road headquarters, where the animal shelter has been based for almost a century – warning that its ability to care for vulnerable animals would be “significantly affected” if it cannot relocate.

The announcement comes just months after the charity closed its assisted veterinary clinic to help manage demand for its services, and one year after its outgoing president warned that increasing regulation and operational pressures were making it “increasingly onerous” for third-sector organisations to operate.

The charity says it needs a “rural, modern and future-proofed facility” that would not only improve animal welfare but also help secure its long-term financial sustainability by creating opportunities to generate income.

JSPCA president Lisa Springate said: “This shelter has been a lifeline for animals and a valued part of the community for many years.

“Relocating is not simply about finding another location, it is about securing a rural, modern and future-proofed facility for the animals who depend on us, while ensuring the sustainability of the charity by being able to generate income.

“We are asking anyone who may be able to help to come forward, in order that we can continue the essential work that is required for the next chapter.”

The charity is seeking a site capable of accommodating domestic animals and wildlife, with separate welfare areas, grooming and exercise facilities, volunteer and staff space, and an education centre alongside a café and charity shop.

It is also appealing for practical, professional and financial support from landowners, businesses, tradespeople, advisers and donors to help make the move possible.

The JSPCA said remaining at its current site limits its ability to generate enough income to meet operating costs. It receives no government funding and relies on donations and legacies.

A statement from the charity said: “Without a suitable new base, the shelter’s ability to take in and care for animals could be significantly affected, as a result of limited opportunities of being able to generate sufficient income from the present site towards the overall operational costs.”

According to the animal shelter, it costs more than £4,000 a day to run its services. Last year it responded to more than 17,000 calls from the public, cared for more than 1,200 wildlife animals and rehomed over 120 domestic animals.

Chief executive Pam Aubert said: “Many families have adopted animals from us, volunteered with us, donated to us or turned to us when they needed help. Now we need that same community spirit to help us to find a new home.”

The charity said it was working closely with tenants at the St Saviour’s Road site, including Charlie Farley’s Too nursery, which said it would continue operating under its existing lease and that it was “very much business as usual”.

The JSPCA has a team of approximately 50 employees, including veterinary professionals, behaviourists, animal carers, reception staff, ambulance drivers and administrative teams.
