JERSEY Airport passengers have been reassured that taxi pick-up and drop-off arrangements will remain unchanged, following concerns that ongoing construction work would make access more difficult for disabled travellers and families.

It comes after an Islander contacted the JEP, fearing that changes to the airport taxi rank would mean passengers would have to be dropped off around 150 yards from the departure doors.

However, Ports of Jersey has clarified that the airport’s taxi pick-up and drop-off area will remain unchanged, stressing that only the taxi overflow area – known as the “bull ring” – is being temporarily closed.

A Ports spokesperson said: “As our departure lounge transformation progresses, deliveries and associated activity has now significantly increased.

“To maintain safety at all times, the taxi overflow area will be temporarily closed, with alternative waiting areas available. The drop-off and taxi pick-up area is unchanged.

“This is the closest location to the construction site, minimising risks by reducing the movement of vehicles and materials across other parts of the airport.

“We will continue to work closely with the taxi industry, our priority is to maintain a safe and reliable service for passengers, while managing this major project.”

Information issued to the taxi trade said the overflow area will close from Monday 22 June. It is expected to remain unavailable for most of the summer while construction continues, although the position will be kept under review.

During the closure, taxi drivers waiting for flights to arrive can use the airport’s main car park, where 30 minutes of free parking is available.

Drivers staying beyond that period will be required to pay parking charges and must park in a designated space rather than waiting on airport roadways.
