RNLI Jersey’s volunteer lifeboat crews had an “exceptionally busy” day on Saturday, launching multiple times to assist vessels in difficulty and take part in a search operation.
The first call came while the St Helier all-weather lifeboat was already on exercise in St Aubin’s Bay. The crew was diverted to assist an eight-metre motor vessel with five people on board after it suffered engine failure about two miles off Noirmont.
Later, the St Catherine’s inshore lifeboat was launched following reports of kite surfers in difficulty near Bouley Bay.
As the inshore lifeboat was returning to station, it was immediately re-tasked alongside the St Helier all-weather lifeboat to assist in a search after an unattended inflatable paddleboard prompted concerns that two children could be in the water.
A large search area was covered before States police confirmed there had been no reports of missing children, allowing both lifeboats to stand down.
The St Helier all-weather lifeboat was then tasked for a fourth incident while returning to station, assisting a 30-foot motor vessel about three miles west of Corbière. The vessel, carrying one person, had suffered an electrical failure and required assistance.
RNLI Jersey said: “Days like [Saturday] are a reminder that our volunteer crews are ready to respond at any hour, whatever the weather and whatever the call.
“If you’re planning to head out on the water, please take a few simple steps before you go. Check the weather and tide, ensure your vessel is well maintained, carry the correct safety equipment, wear a suitable lifejacket, and always let someone know where you’re going and when you expect to return.”
In an emergency at sea, the public is urged to call 999 and ask for Jersey Coastguard.
