Islanders urged to lookout for signs of hedgehogs in need of help

ISLANDERS have been urged to look out for signs of unwell hedgehogs after as a charity reported seeing fewer coming through its doors.
In a recent social media post, a Jersey Hedgehog Preservation Group spokesperson said: “I can’t remember when we have ever had so few hedgehogs to look after, we have eight in care at the moment and we hope to release one tomorrow.
“Let’s hope that this is because they’re well and happy out there and don’t need our help, but please remember if you see a hedgehog out in the daytime, please do take action and ring us or the JSPCA.”
They added: “The only exception to this is that pregnant or lactating hedgehogs may come out while it is still light to feed, gather nesting material, or move their young to another nest, they will be moving well, not wobbling and will look like they are going. Please leave them alone and provide food and water for them at dusk.
“Other healthy hedgehogs will be seen out and about in the early morning or evening as the hours of darkness get shorter but not in the middle of the day.
“However, should you see a hedgehog out in the daylight which is moving lethargically or wobbling, or lying motionless in the sun, please pick it up with gloves, put it in a box or bucket, and give us a ring on 734340.”
