Politicians visit St Peter’s sewage tank to meet engineers about controversial project

BACKBENCH politicians have visited a field in St Peter where a giant sewage tank is being built next to residents who say that the project has made their lives “intolerable”.

Last Monday, the JEP reported that neighbours were “at boiling point” and had “lost trust in the government” because the dust, noise and smell emanated from the site and the surrounding area – which is the focus of a major drainage upgrade to cope with new housing in the north-west of the Island.

Jane Hulse, whose house borders the site and who speaks on behalf of residents along Rue de St Clement and Rue des Fosse, said that the parishioners suspected that work was not going to plan, evidenced by a three-week pause due to equipment failure, and increasingly “ingenious and incredible replies to our questions”.

Two days later, this newspaper reported that the Environment, Housing and Infrastructure Scrutiny Panel had pledged to look into the matter and, true to their word, the group of politicians visited the site on Thursday.

In a social media post, the panel said that, during its visit, “engineers explained the construction process, timelines, and mitigating measures in place to reduce nuisance to neighbouring properties”.

It is understood that the panel was unable to formally take evidence from residents on site but it has invited anyone with comments to submit them in writing. The visit to St Peter was to build evidence before the panel’s first quarterly public meeting in September.

The government says that the tank is necessary for homes to be built and that Environmental Health had “no current concerns with the mitigation measures and site procedures” that had been put in place.

Meanwhile, the government has also shared the latest news on the going ongoing St Peter roadworks.

It said the project was was now entering its final stage.

A spokesperson said: “One final road closure is now needed to complete property connections to the new sewer network and safely decommission the existing sewer.

“The road will be closed in both directions from the Sir George Carteret pub to just before Marks & Spencer from  Friday 31 July until Wednesday 26 August.

“Residents and businesses have been informed, advance warning signs are in place, and diversion routes will be reinstated from previous works.

“Access for residents and businesses will be maintained throughout.

“We would like to thank the public for their patience and understanding as this important project is completed.”
