A NEW initiative to get men talking about their mental health has launched this week.
4Group – a local equipment hire service – has partnered with Man Club to produce stickers that promote its work.
So far, 1,600 stickers have been stuck to 4Group’s machinery and vehicles which promote the Man Club as a “safe place for men to talk, listen or just be” and has a QR code that takes people to its website.
In a statement, 4Group said: “Our vehicles and other hire equipment are used across Jersey every day, visiting construction sites, businesses and communities across the Island. By displaying these stickers, we hope to help spread awareness of Man Club and make it easier for people to find support if they ever need it.”
Matt Falla, founder of Man Club Jersey, said that most of its outreach had been to the “bigger industries” on the Island, like finance. He said that the new initiative had been designed “to bring Man Club to the attention of more people”.
According to Man Club’s website, 77% of men have felt stress, anxiety or depression, but over 40% said they would never talk about it.
Meanwhile, according to NHS statistics, 12.5% of men in England have a mental health disorder while men are three times more likely to die by suicide in England than women, according to the Samaritans.
Mr Falla said that he hopes the stickers will “normalise the discussion that men of a certain age have forgotten how to have” and that they will let people know “that if they are struggling, they don’t have to do so in silence”.
Man Club offer weekly meetings and an opportunity for men to build a community and an opportunity to talk about how they are feeling.
Mr Falla founded the Jersey chapter of Man Club in 2021 after his own struggles with mental health lead him to join the Guernsey chapter in 2019. Alongside the weekly meetings, he visits workplaces and schools where he shares his story, breaks down stigmas and promotes the work of Man Club.
