Galaxy S26 FE proves a bigger battery isn't the only way to change battery life

Samsung didn't touch the battery in the Samsung Galaxy S26 FE. Ituses the same 4,900mAh cell as the Galaxy S25 FE, paired with the same 6.7-inch 120Hz display.

But this year's model lasts meaningfully longer. European Energy Label filings rate the S26 FE at 50 hours of total endurance, up from 42 hours for last year's model.

Mixed-use tests from reviewers back that up, with gains of about 20% more battery life.

The credit goes to a component people only ever compare by benchmark scores, a habit I can't stand, since the number that matters here seldom comes up.

Efficiency gains never spread evenly. Video playback and web browsing benefit most. Hardware video decoding on the 3nm node barely registers on the battery.

But pushing 3D graphics at high frame rates costs watts, and a smaller node can only take so much off the top.

So yes, the 20% figure holds up, with the caveat that it's earned mostly while the phone is playing media. If you're gaming two hours a day, keep your expectations realistic.

What the Exynos 2500 does with 4,900mAh

Let the big core sleep

Leaks ahead of launch suggested Samsung might switch to denser silicon-carbon cells this generation. But it didn't happen.

The S26 FE uses a standard lithium-ion battery at the same 4,900mAh capacity as before. What changed is how far that capacity stretches.

The S25 FE ran on a 4nm process. The S26 FE moves to Samsung Foundry's second-generation 3nm Gate-All-Around node, and that one change sets up everything else.

Gate-All-Around changes how current flows through the transistor, cutting leakage, so the chip can run at lower voltages. Lower voltage means less power pulled from the battery for the same work.

The second saving comes from where the work goes. Of the ten cores, the single Cortex-X925 stays idle until something demanding comes along.

Seven newer Cortex-A725 mid-cores do the everyday work, with two A520s for the lightest background tasks.

The heavy processing for on-device AI runs on the 59 TOPS NPU rather than the big CPU cores.

None of that shows up on a spec sheet a shopper compares in a store aisle, but it all shows up in the battery numbers.

Take this article with you to the next spec sheet you read. You can't read milliampere-hours on their own to predict endurance.

Chip efficiency and display hardware matter every bit as much, and you don't have to take my word for it. The market already shows it.

Last year's Google Pixel 10 Pro XL carries a 5,200mAh cell, and the S26 FE beats it with 300mAh less.

Pixel isn't held back by a cheap chip either. It has a 3nm Tensor G5 behind an LTPO panel. It's a less efficient package overall, partly because of a higher pixel count.

Shopping by capacity is like picking a car for its fuel tank and never asking about fuel economy. With the Exynos 2500, efficiency wins that argument.

How to spot battery champions

Milliampere-hours will still be the marketed number on the box, so here's what I look at before I let it mean anything.

Process node. A move from 4nm to 3nm is worth more than a few hundred extra mAh. You won't find it on a retail spec sheet, but you will find it with a bit of research.

Then again, you're reading this, so you probably already do it.

The energy label rating. Every new phone sold in the EU now carries an endurance figure in hours, tested under the same conditions regardless of brand.

It's the closest thing to a fuel economy sticker phones have ever had, and it's the number I'd trust more than anything on a marketing slide.

Display refresh tech. A 120Hz panel that can idle down to 1Hz draws less power than a panel locked at 60Hz or 120Hz. Look for LTPO, and it's often absent on midrange Android phones.
