Pixel Tag shows us Google's answer to years of Android smart tag frustrations

Google has yet to release its own smart tag, despite building out the Android Find Hub over the past couple of years. But in just a couple of weeks, that could all change. Google has announced its next Pixel event for August 12, where we expect to see new phones, but it might also have a small surprise in store with its very first smart tag.

This could be the push we've been looking for

We've seen quite a few leaks over the past couple of weeks with regard to all the new stuff that Google is going to announce at its upcoming event. But the Pixel Tag comes as a bit of a surprise. 9to5Google has shared an image of the product, but has very few details about how the device will operate at the moment.

With that said, we hope that Google will utilize all the latest technologies available to make it one of the best trackers you can get for Android. One of the things that we'd like to see in the Pixel Tag is support for UWB. That alone will be a huge boost over other Android trackers on the market.

The brand could even take things further by utilizing Channel Sounding, which we have seen on its other devices. Perhaps most important is that Google will make the Pixel Tag compatible with all Android devices. Despite being in a different category, Apple's own AirTag has shown the industry how to do things right.

The AirTag offers a tracking experience that's simple, seamless, and highly accurate. The brand even released a sequel that delivers an even better experience. We've seen smart tags from brands like Motorola and Samsung, but something from Google could really take this product past its tipping point.

For years, we've been looking for a smart tag that will outdo the AirTag and other Android solutions currently on the market; maybe Google will make it happen. The good news is that we won't have to wait long to find out what Google's been up to. On August 12, Google's Pixel event will take place, revealing all-new hardware for 2026.

From what we've seen in leaks, the Pixel 11 and Pixel 11 Pro will only provide iterative changes when it comes to the design. However, it is still generating some buzz thanks to its mysterious illumination feature that's being dubbed "Pixel Glow". If the rumors are right, there's a good chance that the Pixel will bring back the simple notification light.
