Spotify finally lets you turn off all video content on the platform

by · Android Police

While Spotify has dominated the music streaming business for a while, the service was conspicuously missing music videos. That changed last year with the launch of music videos, first in international markets, followed by a US rollout late last year.

This is evidently great news for many users, given how rival services like YouTube Music and Apple Music have offered the feature for years now. However, unlike both services, Spotify doesn't offer a toggle to disable music videos from ever appearing.

That's changing today, as the company has just announced the global rollout of updated video controls that let you disable every video-related feature on Spotify (via The Verge).

This is achieved thanks to new toggles in Settings > Content and display that let you independently enable or disable music videos and "All other videos," which covers TikTok-style content from creators and video podcasts. Users will also find the toggle to turn off Canvas on the same page. Thanks to this separation, you can choose to disable only music videos while keeping the rest enabled, or use any other combination you like.

These controls will be available to all Spotify users

Video controls for a Family Plan manager

Spotify already lets Family Plan managers control these visibility settings for users under 13. However, this update now gives the same controls to managers of regular Family Plan members. Given the nature of this feature, Spotify is making the toggles available to both paying subscribers and free users.

When you've made your selection from the Settings, Spotify says the changes will apply across all its platforms, including mobile, TV, desktop, and the web. Although the rollout of these toggles began today, it could take a few days (or even weeks) to appear globally. Unfortunately, Spotify hasn't provided a country-by-country launch date to help us determine when these toggles will appear stateside.

While the addition of the toggles is welcome, Spotify says you may still see some visuals in adverts. "Users will still see video ads, as well as Canvas-like visuals on some audio ads," the company noted in its blog post. This will depend largely on your subscription tier, with free users likely to see more ads than the rest.

Navigate to Content and display from Spotify settings to check if the toggles are live on your device. What do you make of this new addition to the streaming app?
