Google Sheets gets a Gemini upgrade you’ll actually use

by · Android Police

For all the improvements that Google has rolled out to Gemini in Google Sheets, there's still a lot more it can do. While Gemini can help create new formulas in spreadsheets, it was of little help if you ran into an error when manually entering a formula. That's changing now, with Gemini in Google Sheets now capable of helping you troubleshoot formula errors.

Google says that Gemini in Google Sheets can analyze the formula entered and the surrounding cells to provide you with a simple explanation about the error. More importantly, it will also provide the right formula that you can use.

Gemini will automatically show a Fix button when you enter a formula that has an error. From there, the Gemini sidebar will open on the right, explaining the error and providing the right formula.

While Sheets already flags formula errors, it provides a generic error message with a limited explanation of what's exactly wrong. Plus, it's either too technical or vague for most users to understand. Errors like #REF!, #VALUE!, etc. are common but hard to understand.

Gemini in Google Sheets should now act as a bridge to solve these errors, so you can focus on getting your work done.

If you spend all day in Google Sheets, this new Gemini capability should help you create more complex formulas without having to worry about errors. Google says Gemini will help you with all kinds of formulas, from simple to complex equations.

Rolling out now with enhanced limits

The enhanced Gemini experience in Google Sheets is rolling out now for Business, Enterprise, Education, AI Pro, and AI Ultra users.

In its announcement, Google also notes that until July 15, 2026, it is giving users higher limits to experience the improved Gemini in Google Sheets. After that, per-usage limits will apply, with the company providing more details before the limits go into effect.

Post July 15, 2026, only users with the AI Expanded Access licenses will have higher usage limits.

This upgrade arrives just over a month after Google added support for custom instructions in Gemini for Google Docs, allowing users to tailor the AI assistant to their specific needs.
