Pixel Buds update brings functionality they should have had all along

The Google Pixel Buds are getting even better starting today, as you'll now be able to control audio and other earbud settings just by asking Gemini.

One of the best parts of owning a Google Pixel-branded device is that Google keeps releasing new software features that make the product better over time. Several Pixel Watch models just picked up a trio of health features, and now, the company is rolling out a number of new features for the Pixel Buds.

As spotted by 9to5Google, Google has updated the Pixel Buds app to support voice-based controls through Gemini. With the latest version, you can ask Gemini to change a wide range of earbud settings. For example, you can ask it to turn the ANC on or off, adjust the EQ, or even change more specific settings like the earbuds' touch controls and Conversation Detection.

Previously, changing some of these settings required opening the Pixel Buds app and digging through the menus manually. With the latest update, you can simply ask Gemini to make the change, and it'll handle the setting for you. The functionality appears to be rolling out with version 1.0.981607934 of the Pixel Buds app.

Gemini can now change Pixel Buds settings for you

Once you've updated to the latest version, you should see @Pixel Buds appear as a connected app within Gemini's settings. Then, whenever you ask Gemini to change a Pixel Buds setting, Gemini will show that it's connecting to your earbuds and make the requested change.

The feature is already rolling out through the latest Pixel Buds app update on the Google Play Store, so it's worth checking for an update if you want to try it. Of course, you'll also need to be using the Gemini app for the voice controls to work.

And this isn't the only upgrade Google has planned for the Pixel Buds. The Pixel Buds Pro 2 are also set to get Dynamic ANC, which can automatically adjust noise cancellation in real time if the seal changes as the earbuds move around in your ears.

Google also announced during the Pixel 11 series launch that it's working on tighter integration between the Pixel Buds and Pixel Watch. This includes automatically pausing music, disabling touch controls, and silencing notifications on your earbuds when the Pixel Watch detects that you've fallen asleep.

Those features haven't rolled out just yet, though, so keep an eye out for them with future updates.
