When I first discovered Gemini's instructions feature, I used it to keep responses concise and added a few other preferences. It saved me from repeating the same prompts in every chat, which was useful enough on its own.

But after using Gemini more regularly, I realized I could be more specific about how I wanted it to behave. Instead of setting generic preferences, I started tailoring instructions around the types of tasks I ask Gemini to help with most often.

The results were noticeably better, and I found myself spending less time correcting responses.

I stopped using instructions just for formatting

My first Gemini instructions were mostly about formatting. I told Gemini to keep responses concise, use bullet points when appropriate, and avoid unnecessary fluff.

Those preferences were helpful because they saved me from entering the same requests at the start of every conversation.

To set up instructions, visit the Gemini website, click the cog icon, go to Personal Intelligence, and choose Instructions for Gemini.

You can add preferences that Gemini will automatically apply to future chats. Similar steps apply for the mobile app.

However, I realized I was focusing too much on how Gemini presented information and not enough on how it approached tasks. The real value of instructions was shaping Gemini's behavior before the conversation started.

The biggest improvements came when I started treating instructions as a way to influence Gemini's decision-making process.

I used instructions to give Gemini the context it was missing

One of the biggest benefits of Gemini's instructions feature is that it can save context I find myself repeating across multiple conversations. So I added recurring information that often influences the advice I need.

For nutrition-related questions, I included my typical protein and fiber goals. For gardening questions, I provided details about my balcony setup, the plants I'm growing, and the amount of sunlight each area receives throughout the day.

That way, when I ask Gemini for meal ideas or plant care advice, I don't need to start from scratch every time.

My instructions aren't static, either. As my routines change or I add new plants, I update the information accordingly. Gemini doesn't remember every conversation forever, and I often start fresh chats rather than continuing old ones.

Still, adding personal context doesn't guarantee that every answer will be correct. Gemini can misunderstand a question or provide inaccurate information, especially regarding topics that require up-to-date or highly specific knowledge.

I made Gemini challenge my assumptions rather than agree with me

One thing I noticed after using Gemini regularly is that it's often eager to agree with whatever idea I present.

That's not always a problem, but when I'm brainstorming ideas, evaluating a purchase, or making a decision, I want honest feedback.

That's why I added the following instructions:

Don't simply agree with my ideas. Critically evaluate them, point out weaknesses, risks, tradeoffs, and alternative perspectives. If there are flaws in my reasoning, explain them clearly.

I've found this particularly useful when planning trips or making decisions where I genuinely want a second opinion.

Rather than reinforcing my initial assumptions, Gemini started pointing out factors I may have overlooked or explaining why another option might be a better fit.

I asked Gemini to admit uncertainty when it isn't confident

Another thing that has always bothered me about AI chatbots is that they can sometimes sound confident even when they're unsure.

The answer may be incomplete, outdated, or based on assumptions, but the wording doesn't always make that obvious.

To reduce that problem, I added this instruction:

If you are not confident about an answer, say so clearly. Distinguish between facts, assumptions, and speculation. Do not present uncertain information as if it were confirmed.

I don't expect this to eliminate mistakes, but it does encourage Gemini to be more transparent about the limits of its knowledge.

I customized Gemini for the questions I ask most often

After experimenting with Gemini's instructions feature, I realized that some of my most common conversations followed the same patterns.

Whether I was researching a product, comparing services, planning a trip, or learning about a new topic, I often wanted the same type of response.

So I added the following instructions:

When comparing products, services, or options, explain the tradeoffs, highlight potential drawbacks, and recommend the best choice based on the information available. Don't simply provide a list of options.

This small change improved many of the answers I received.

Instead of getting long lists that left me to sort through the details myself, Gemini became more likely to explain why one option might be a better fit than another and what compromises I would be making along the way.

I also found that the advice became more practical. Rather than treating every option as equally valid, Gemini would often identify situations where a particular choice made the most sense and point out factors I might not have considered.
