Motorola's wide foldable may surprise you in the hardware department

Wide foldables are all the hype now. Samsung was the first to bring one to market with the Galaxy Z Fold 8, while Apple's first foldable also features a similar form factor. Motorola is expected to join the bandwagon soon, after briefly teasing its own wide foldable earlier this month. A new leak has now spilled the beans on some of this upcoming foldable's hardware.

According to Android Headlines, Motorola's wide foldable (known internally as Razr Flex) will feature a 6.92-inch main display, backed by a 4.97-inch cover display. That makes it significantly smaller than the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the iPhone Duo. Furthermore, the foldable will reportedly include the 3nm Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chip, which also powers the manufacturer's larger book-style foldable.

By comparison, the recently announced Signature 27 sports the newer and more powerful Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chip. Additionally, the phone will include a couple of 50-megapixel cameras at the back, with the main sensor also providing 50x digital zoom. The cover screen and primary screen each include a 32-megapixel sensor.

Other specs include 256GB of internal storage, 12GB of RAM, and a 5,000mAh battery pack, with Android 17 running out of the box. This wide foldable will feature an IP48/IP49 ingress protection rating, and the report also mentions a dedicated AI hardware key on the device.

The Razr Wide Fold could be thicker than the Galaxy Z Fold 8

If the leaked dimensions of 110 x 149 x 5.8mm (unfolded) and 110 x 76 x 12.6mm are accurate, Motorola's wide-body foldable could be significantly thicker than the Galaxy Z Fold 8, which measures 9.7mm when folded. Similarly, Samsung's foldable may also have an advantage in overall weight, with the Razr foldable supposedly weighing 215 grams versus the Z Fold 8's 201 grams.

Android Headlines has also shared mockups of the device in Pantone Coriander and Pantone Dark Botanical Garden colorways (pictured above). These concepts are supposedly based on sketches, leaked specifications, and the design language of recently released Motorola phones. So while these aren't official images, they're the closest we'll get to seeing what Motorola's wide foldable could look like right now.

While there may be complaints about the bulk or overall thickness, it's fair to reserve judgment until we've had a chance to try the foldable ourselves. It looks like we may have to wait a few more months for that chance, with Android Headlines saying the phone will only be released by the end of the year.
