I stopped wasting time switching apps after unlocking this Gemini feature

by · Android Police

Every time I wanted to get something done on my phone, I found myself bouncing between apps.

I'd open Gmail to check an email, switch to Google Calendar to see if I was free, then jump into Keep to save an idea that had popped into my head.

That changed after I connected Gemini to Google's apps. Instead of deciding which app to open, I ask Gemini.

Whether I'm checking my inbox, adding an event to my calendar, creating a note, or finding a document, it usually gets me there faster.

Here's how one Gemini feature saved me from constantly switching between apps.

Before trying these features, open the Gemini app, tap the settings icon, go to Personal intelligence > Connected apps, and enable the Google services you want Gemini to work with.

Gemini lets me manage my inbox without opening Gmail

Gmail is probably the Google app I use most throughout the day, which also means it's one of the biggest sources of interruptions.

I'd often open it to check whether an important email had arrived, only to end up reading several other messages before returning to what I was doing.

Instead of opening Gmail and scrolling through my inbox, I can open the Gemini app and ask questions like, "Do I have any unread emails from my editor?" or "Summarize the important emails I received today."

Within a few seconds, Gemini gives me the information I need without making me dig through dozens of messages.

It's also useful when I need to find something specific.

Rather than remembering the exact subject line or sender, I can ask, "Did anyone send me a PDF this week?" or "Find the email with my hotel booking."

For quickly checking messages, finding information, or drafting a reply, Gemini has become my first stop.

It saves me from opening Gmail dozens of times a day to perform simple tasks.

Calendar has become conversational

Creating calendar events used to involve several taps. I'd open Google Calendar, tap the + button, fill in the event title, choose the date and time, and save it.

With Gemini, I can describe what I need in plain English.

If I remember that I have a dentist appointment next Tuesday at 3 p.m., I can tell Gemini to add it to my calendar.

If a friend suggests meeting for coffee on Friday morning, I can create the event without opening Google Calendar at all.

Now, I often don't even open the Gemini app.

Instead of scrolling through my calendar, I can ask, "Hey Google, what's on my agenda this afternoon?" or "Hey Google, am I free after 4 p.m. tomorrow?"

Gemini gives me the answer immediately, which is often faster than navigating through different calendar views.

I capture ideas without thinking about where they belong

Ideas often arise while I'm reading an article, watching a video, or doing something else.

Instead of thinking about which app I need, I tell Gemini what I want to save.

I can ask it to create a note with a new article idea, add an item to my shopping list, or set a reminder for something I need to do later.

The thought is captured immediately, and I can get back to what I was doing.

Sometimes, I say, "Hey Google," followed by what I want to do.

Whether it's "Create a note called article ideas," "Add coffee beans to my shopping list," or "Remind me to call the dentist tomorrow," Gemini handles it seamlessly.

That hands-free workflow is what makes the biggest difference. Speaking my thoughts out loud is much faster, especially when I'm busy with something else.

It connects information across Google's apps

The main reason Gemini has become my productivity hub is its ability to integrate information from Gmail, Calendar, and Google Drive.

For instance, I can ask Gemini, "What do I have planned after my flight next week?" It will check my calendar and retrieve relevant details from my Gmail confirmations.

If someone sends me a document via email before a meeting, I can ask Gemini to find it, without needing to remember which app it's in or when I received it.

I can ask, "What's my first meeting tomorrow, and are there any related emails?" or "Find the hotel confirmation for my trip next month and tell me when I need to check in."

Gemini pulls together information from Gmail and Calendar, giving me a single answer instead of making me search through multiple apps.

This cross-app awareness saves me from constantly switching between Gmail, Calendar, Drive, and Keep to piece together the information I need.

Gemini has become the app I open first

I still use Gmail, Calendar, Keep, Drive, and other Google apps every day.

They are too powerful to be replaced by a chatbot, and for more complex tasks, I still prefer their full interfaces.

What has changed is how I access these apps. Instead of deciding which app to open, I ask Gemini.

Whether I'm checking my schedule, searching my inbox, creating a note, or finding a document, it has become the fastest way to get the information I need.
