Google solves the biggest headache of switching from iPhone to Android
by Rajesh Pandey · Android PoliceAndroid 17 is bringing several new features and improvements to your Pixel. But that's not it. Google has also made switching from an iPhone much easier. It is rolling out a new version of Android Switch that solves some of the biggest pain points of moving your data from iPhone to Android.
Unlike older versions of Android, Paul Dunlop, Product Lead for Onboarding, Settings, and Switching of Android at Google, says Android Switch is now directly into both operating systems. That means you will no longer need to download a separate app to start the migration process.
More importantly, you can start transferring your data wirelessly without any compromises. Previously, Android Switch required connecting the Android and iPhone together via a USB cable to initiate the transfer process.
Even better, Android Switch can now transfer more data from your iPhone than before. This includes passwords, passkeys, Wi-Fi credentials, alarms, files and folders, call history, SMS, MMS, encrypted RCS conversations, calendar attachments, and Apple Notes attachments and labels.
It'll even migrate your wallpaper, home screen layout, app placements, and accessibility settings, making the transition from iPhone to Android feel almost effortless.
Some of these data types were already previously supported by Android Switch, but Google says they have made further improvements for a more reliable experience.
Google says it has developed new APIs that developers can use to offer cross-platform migration. These APIs will allow apps to transfer their data between the two platforms, making the hassle of switching platforms a thing of the past.
Transfer your eSIM across devices with Android Switch
The upgraded Android Switch migration experience will transfer your Google account across devices and log you into it, all without you entering the password.
Finally, during the initial setup, Android Switch can transfer the eSIM from your iPhone to your new Android device. As part of the process, it will also set up RCS in the background, ensuring you are ready to go as soon as the setup is complete.
The upgraded Android Switch migration experience is currently rolling out to a "small % of Android 17 devices." Its availability will expand "over the coming weeks and months."
All these changes should make switching from iPhone to Android far less frustrating. The only bummer is the slow rollout, as the improved Android Switch experience is not immediately available to all. Apple should also roll out similar improvements to the Android to iPhone migration experience as part of iOS 27 in September this year.
