Google Maps on Android Auto rolls out real-time stop sign and traffic light alerts

Signs, signs, everywhere there’s signs. The lyrics may have been sung by Tesla, but if you’re driving your Tesla and using Android Auto (with a workaround, that is), there’s one place where upcoming signs have not been: on Google Maps.

Upcoming signs rollout ahead

That’s changing now. Using Google Maps with Android Auto, 9to5Google spotted an indication ahead of an intersection of either a stop sign or turn signal ahead that displays as a pop-up within the floating street name / turn guidance box , similar to how it indicates a speed trap alert.

This is an improvement on the static traffic lights and stop signs feature that has been available for several years.

Persistent signals without active navigation

This update joins another one where traffic signals and stop signs will be a persistent part of the Google Maps display on Android Auto, even if a destination is not set. That one was noted a couple of weeks ago when Mishaal Rahman, community engagement manager for Android, was answering issues Reddit users were having with the speedometer feature, as well as the stop signs and traffic lights feature.

“I spoke with a member of the Android Auto product team and was informed that the ability to have the speedometer, speed limit, and traffic signals/stop signs showing without a destination set is still rolling out,” Rahman wrote.

Look for the signs

The change is a server-side switch. When Google “rolls out” a feature, it takes about two weeks for it to spread across its user base. So if you haven’t received either feature yet, you should soon.
