Samsung's wider Z Fold 8 might have tougher glass than the Ultra

For years now, Samsung's book-style foldable has been the undisputed innovation king, but that might not be the case this time around, at least in one key aspect.

For reference, Samsung is ready to unleash not one, but two new book-style foldables at its Unpacked event sometime in July. There's the regular Z Fold 8 and a new 'wider' book-style foldable.

From what we already know, the 'regular' Z Fold 8 will be called the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. The wide-screen foldable, on the other hand, will be called the Galaxy Z Fold 8.

With that confusing naming convention out of the way, it is the wide-screen Z Fold 8 that will reportedly have a significantly better inner display glass when compared to the more premium

The development was highlighted by ZDNet Korea, indicating that the wide-screen foldable will have thicker glass. The thickness will jump to 60μm (micrometers), all while the sleeker Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra will hold steady at 45μm.

For reference, the thinner the inner display's ultra-thin glass, the less likely it is to break while folding. As a con, it also makes it easier for creases to form, complete with an overall reduced durability against falls and impacts. That's precisely why engineering a foldable is a balancing act.

With a higher thickness than the more premium 'Ultra' Z Fold 8, the brand-new wide-screen phone will be more 'crease-resistant.' As a consequence, it will also be relatively thicker and less 'pocketable'

The Flip, on the other hand, is expected to see no major changes.
