Google’s new $99 Gemini smart speaker is available to order now

by · Android Police

Google released the original Google Home Speaker all the way back in 2016. Fast-forward to 2020, and the tech giant came out with the Nest Audio.

That was Google's last release in the speaker department, and we've been waiting for an upgrade ever since.

That wait ends now.

The Mountain View, California-based tech giant just unveiled its latest Google Home Speaker, and at least on paper, it's a solid upgrade.

The new speaker features a modern Quad-Core A55 2.0 GHz processor equipped with a dedicated NPU, 1GB LPDDR4 RAM, and even 4GB of storage.

It has been upgraded to Wi-Fi 6, compared to the Nest Audio's older Wi-Fi 5 standard. Similarly, Bluetooth has also been upgraded to Bluetooth 5.4, which should ensure a more stable and longer-range connection.

Compared to the Nest Mini, the new speaker boasts a 2x larger driver and 2.5x stronger bass. This is a 58 mm full-range driver.

Despite all the hardware-related upgrades, though, the main star of the show here is the software. The new smart speaker is powered by Gemini for Home, "a radically smarter and more capable voice assistant that helps you tackle everyday tasks seamlessly."

Gemini is capable of listening and understanding multiple commands at once. Traditionally, if you wanted to, let's say, give your room a cozier vibe, you'd have to give different commands for lighting, temperature, music, and more. With Gemini, you just need one command — something like "Hey Google/Gemini, dim the lights, turn down the temperature, and cue up relaxing music."

Similar to its implementation on your phone, you'll be able to get conversational help from Gemini Live too, albeit only with a Google Home Premium subscription.

For reference, you'll get 6 months of Google Home Premium for free if you purchase a Google Home Speaker on or before September 30, 2026, which should help you decide if you want to commit to the $10 a month subscription later in the year.

The new Google Home Speaker is available in four colors: Porcelain, Hazel, Jade, and Berry, with the latter two being Google Store exclusives. The speaker is available to pre-order now for $99.99.
