Dark mode update for color Kindles is starting to roll out

by · Android Police

If you're looking for a device that's easy on the eyes, then it's hard to find something better than a device with an e-ink display. For many, the new hotness in that area are the new color Kindles, including the Kindle Colorsoft and Scribe Colorsoft. However, both of those devices only support a light mode layout, beaming harsh bright light into your eyes at times when you'd prefer a much more muted tone.

Thankfully for aching eyes, those days are over. The long-awaited dark mode update is starting its rollout for the color Kindles.

Dark mode starts rolling out today

Dark mode has been available on the original, monochrome Kindle lines for years now, but the color versions were left out of that update. Instead, Colorsoft-lovers have been stuck with light mode. That is, until today.

Amazon has finally finished the dark mode update for the Kindle Colorsoft and Scribe Colorsoft, and it will start rolling out today, April 24. However, don't be worried if the update doesn't show up for your specific color Kindle today, as the update will be slowly filtering out to people across the course of a few weeks.

To switch, head to Settings, then Screen and brightness, and then select Appearance or Color Style, then select the dark mode from the list. Or, you can switch over to dark mode by pulling down the toolbar at the top of the screen.

One of the nice touches in the Kindle dark mode is the ability to choose where it's used. So if you want your menus to be dark, but not your books, you can set it up to show that way. Otherwise, you can set it all to dark or light, depending on your tastes.

This update doesn't just add a dark mode. Also included are the new Smart Shapes, which morphs rough sketches into precise diagrams. If you're using your Kindle Scribe to create diagrams, then you're likely to enjoy these a lot.

Hopefully, this update will also go to plan, and won't be suddenly withdrawn, like some previous recent Kindle updates have been. Kindle updates have been a little bit wonky recently, with many users complaining of bad battery life and other bugs resulting from updates.
