Gary Neville backs referee’s call on Antoine Semenyo incident at Old Trafford
· GhanaSoccernetManchester United legend Gary Neville has defended referee Simon Hooper’s decision to show Antoine Semenyo a yellow card during Tuesday’s dramatic 4-4 Premier League draw between Manchester United and Bournemouth.
The incident occurred late in the first half when Semenyo appeared to put his hands on the throat of United defender Diogo Dalot, sparking angry reactions from home supporters who felt the Bournemouth forward should have been sent off. Dalot was also shown a yellow card for his part in the confrontation.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Neville said the referee made the correct call, despite acknowledging the risk taken by Semenyo.
“It looked like he’s giving him a clip in the face, but maybe it’s lower. It’s certainly a massive risk,” Neville said.
“I can see why Semenyo’s snapped. Dalot bumped him while he’s in the air; it’s a bit naughty.”
Neville added that although the gesture went towards the neck area, the Bournemouth forward appeared to pull back before the situation escalated.
“He’s gone for his neck, but he just pulled back. Two yellow cards is the right decision,” he said.
The decision contrasted with a similar incident involving United midfielder Casemiro in 2023, when the Brazilian was sent off for grabbing Crystal Palace’s Will Hughes by the throat, a comparison heavily referenced by fans during the match.
Despite the controversy, Neville maintained that context and restraint were key factors in the referee’s judgement.
Semenyo was on target in the draw, taking his tally for goal contributions to 10 in the Premier League.
