The Bizarre Montauk Project Conspiracy That Helped Inspire STRANGER THINGS

Before Stranger Things sent kids into secret laboratories and other dimensions, its creators were looking toward a real place with an appropriately weird reputation.

Ryan Socash of It’s History explores Camp Hero, the former military installation at the eastern tip of Long Island that became tangled in the infamous Montauk Project conspiracy and helped inspire the original concept for the hit Netflix series.

Socash follows Camp Hero from colonial farmland through its military service during both World Wars and its later role in America’s Cold War defenses.

Today, the former installation is Camp Hero State Park in Montauk, New York, where old military structures and its massive radar installation are still standing.

“Built up during World War II and later transformed into a Cold War air-defense site, it eventually became famous for something far stranger: conspiracy theories about mind control, time travel, secret experiments, and underground government projects. The site is now part of Camp Hero State Park, where its former military structures and enormous radar installation remain.”

Those abandoned buildings and strange-looking pieces of Cold War technology proved to be perfect fuel for increasingly wild stories about what supposedly happened at the base.
