New GAME OF THRONES Spinoff Gets Encouraging Update as Steve Toussaint Shares What He’s Heard About THE SEA SNAKE
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantThe world ofGame of Throneskeeps growing, and one of the franchise’s most intriguing projects just received a small but encouraging update.
While HBO continues building out its Westeros slate with shows like House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, another project has been quietly sailing along in development for years: The Sea Snake.
What makes this one especially interesting is that it’s set to be the first animated series in the Game of Thrones franchise.
Over the years, HBO has taken a relatively measured approach to expanding George R.R. Martin’s fantasy universe. While several projects have been announced, only House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms have successfully made it to series.
Other ideas, including the Long Night prequel Bloodmoon and the proposed Jon Snow sequel starring Kit Harington, never moved forward.
Now, as fans look ahead to House of the Dragon Season 3, attention is naturally turning toward what comes next. One project that remains on the horizon is The Sea Snake, a spinoff centered on Corlys Velaryon, the legendary seafarer portrayed by Steve Toussaint.
The series was originally conceived as a live-action show before evolving into an animated project. During a recent conversation with ScreenRant, Toussaint offered an update on where things stand, and while there’s no major breakthrough to report, it sounds like the series is still very much alive.
He explained: “…Initially when it was mooted, when we were shooting season 1, it was mooted and I was like, ‘Oh my God, that’d be great.’ And then I thought, ‘I can’t play 21 again. Oh s***, it’s too late.’ And then George [R.R. Martin] said to me, ‘Oh no, it’ll be animated.’ And I was like, ‘Okay’ great.’
“But that’s the last I heard. I saw George just a few weeks ago and as far as I’m aware, it’s ongoing. I don’t know what stage they’re at with it, but it’s still a possibility. But other than that, I don’t know.”
That isn’t exactly a production update packed with details, but it does suggest the project hasn't been abandoned. Considering HBO’s current focus on House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, it’s understandable that The Sea Snake isn’t racing toward release.
The good news for fans is that the show wouldn’t spoil anything involving Corlys’ fate in House of the Dragon. The series is designed as a prequel that would explore the legendary voyages that made Corlys Velaryon one of the most famous figures in Westerosi history.
Known as the Sea Snake, Corlys embarked on nine epic journeys that took him farther across the known world than almost anyone before him.
His travels carried him deep into Essos, including visits to places like Asshai-by-the-Shadow, Qarth, and Yi Ti. Those adventures earned him immense wealth, influence, and prestige, helping establish House Velaryon as one of the most powerful families in the realm.
The final voyage was completed around 90 AC, roughly four decades before the events expected to unfold in House of the Dragon Season 3.
While fans may be eager to see those massive seafaring adventures brought to life, Toussaint has another aspect of Corlys’ story he'd love to explore.
The actor shared: “Do you know, actually, what most interests me about them, and this is terrible because I’m a bit of a romantic, I’m actually more interested in how he won Rhaenys… And then I love the stuff about him going off and adventures because I think a lot of him doing that is his spirit that he has to go and see, but also to impress this lady.”
That angle could make for some great storytelling. Corlys’ voyages are legendary, but the relationship between him and Rhaenys Targaryen has been one of the strongest and most interesting partnerships we've seen in the franchise. Seeing how that romance began could add a fascinating layer to all the globe-spanning adventures.
Of course, The Sea Snake is just one piece of HBO’s growing Westeros roadmap. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has already secured a second season, and HBO reportedly hopes to adapt several more Dunk and Egg stories. The long-discussed 10,000 Ships series remains in development and would follow Princess Nymeria’s migration to Dorne more than a thousand years before the events of Game of Thrones.
There’s also another animated project reportedly in the works called The Golden Empire, which would explore the mysterious eastern civilization of Yi Ti. Beyond that, George R.R. Martin has indicated that additional spinoffs and even sequel concepts are being developed.
There have been rumors about a potential Arya Stark-focused continuation, and it’s always possible that the shelved Jon Snow concept could find new life someday.
The biggest project of all will be the upcoming theatrical film Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest. The movie has been confirmed by Warner Bros., with Beau Willimon, known for House of Cards and Andor, writing the screenplay.
The story will chronicle Aegon Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros roughly 300 years before the original series, bringing dragons, large-scale warfare, and one of the most important chapters in Westerosi history to the big screen.
That film still appears to be in the early stages, so fans probably shouldn't expect it before 2028.
For now, The Sea Snake remains one of the more intriguing mysteries on HBO’s slate. If it eventually moves forward, it could open up entirely new corners of George R.R. Martin’s world while giving fans something they've never experienced before: an animated Game of Thrones adventure centered on one of Westeros' greatest explorers.
