STAR WARS: THE NINTH JEDI Introduces a Cool Lightsaber Twist That Started With a “Delightful Misconception”

by · GeekTyrant

Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jediis set to expand one of the most beloved stories from Star Wars: Visions, and it's bringing back one of the short's most fascinating concepts.

In this version of the galaxy far, far away, lightsabers don't simply have fixed blade colors. Instead, the blade changes color depending on the wielder's connection to the Force.

As it turns out, that unique spin on lightsabers came from what the creative team described as a "delightful misconception."

The upcoming limited anime series continues the story of Lah Kara, a Force-sensitive young woman living in the distant future as she searches for her missing father.

Before the show's debut, the creative team, including Kenji Kamiyama, spoke about how this version of Star Wars came together and shared the surprising origin of its signature lightsaber concept.

Kamiyama explained that when he first watched the original Star Wars trilogy, he mistakenly believed lightsabers naturally changed color depending on who was using them.

While he eventually realized that wasn't how they actually worked in the established canon, the idea stuck with him. Rather than letting it go, he built it into The Ninth Jedi, creating a fresh take on one of the franchise's most recognizable weapons.

It's one of those ideas that feels right at home in Star Wars. The lightsaber is a reflection of the person holding it, visually revealing their relationship with the Force in real time. It's a fun concept that gives this story its own identity while still feeling connected to the spirit of the franchise.

The team also talked about Kara's journey and the inspiration behind her character. According to director Shunsuke Tada, her path was designed to echo the growth of Luke Skywalker, beginning with someone who has potential but hasn't yet discovered what they're capable of.

"Luke was also an unknown boy and not talented in the beginning, [and] he gradually becomes a true Jedi. We tried not to make Kara look like a Master from the beginning, but she’s gradually growing.

“In the original story of The Ninth Jedi, Kara’s not trying to win over her father or somebody else. She’s trying to win over herself and grow as a person."

That's a classic Star Wars character arc, and it's one that continues to resonate because it focuses on personal growth instead of instant greatness. Kara isn't introduced as an unstoppable hero. She earns every step of her journey, much like Luke did before her.

The Ninth Jedi was already one of the standout entries from Star Wars: Visions, and expanding it into a full series feels like the natural next step. Between its distinctive anime style, its fresh mythology, and this inventive lightsaber idea, the series looks ready to carve out its own memorable place in the Star Wars universe.

Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi premieres on Disney+ and Hulu on August 5, 2026.
