Robert Pattinson Says Batman Is the "The Most Relevant and Important" Superhero as THE BATMAN: PART II Gears Up
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantFans have been waiting a long time to return to Gotham, and The Batman: Part IIis finally getting ready to roll cameras this summer in London.
By the time the sequel hits theaters, it’ll have been more than five years since The Batman landed in 2022. That’s a long gap, but if the first film and The Penguin are anything to go by, director Matt Reevesisn’t going to spend this kind of time on something unless it’s worth it.
While we wait, Robert Pattinsonhas been talking about stepping back into the cape and cowl, and he’s got some strong feelings about Batman’s place in pop culture.
According to Pattinson, Batman isn’t just another superhero, he’s “the granddaddy of superheroes and the most relevant and important.”
Pattinson also opened up about how stepping into the role changed his perspective on the character’s legacy, syaing, “Since I started doing the part, you look into the kind of legacy of it. There’s something about that face that’s a very deep and primal thing.
“It connects to people, it connects to children, it connects to adults, and then the legacy of the movies as well. I mean, they just got incredibly lucky with how they started and the filmmakers who were attracted to the character."
From Tim Burton to Christopher Nolan and now Reeves, Batman has consistently attracted filmmakers with a strong vision, and that’s helped keep the character evolving instead of feeling stale.
Pattinson also said that there’s pressure that comes with wearing the suit. No actor wants to be the weak link in a franchise that has delivered so many iconic moments.
"And so they’ve made so many really, really great Batman movies, and everybody wants to add to the legacy," he continued. "No one wants to be the person who messes it up."
Landing the role itself wasn’t something Pattinson took lightly either. He compared the experience to “climbing Everest,” which gives you an idea of just how daunting it felt stepping into Batman’s boots. Especially considering the competition reportedly came down to him and Nicholas Hoult.
Now, with production about to begin, anticipation is building again. If Reeves and Pattinson can build on what they started, The Batman: Part II could end up being an incredible film that the fans will love.
