Charlie Cox Says He Thought Vincent D'Onofrio Was Delusional for Believing DAREDEVIL Would Return After Being Canceled
by Jessica Fisher · GeekTyrantDaredevil was a huge hit series at Netflix. After wrapping three successful seasons, fans were ready for more, but it was soon canceled, and its fans and stars were left reeling.
It was then four years between Daredevil’s cancelation and the announcement of the rebooted Daredevil: Born Again at Disney+. That’s a long time for the show’s cast to be in limbo, but one actor never stopped believing they’d return.
In a recent interview with Daredevil star Charlie Cox on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, host Josh Horowitz asked about the original show’s cancelation, and Cox said:
“Yeah, like we ended on season 3 was a hit. We were supposed to go and do season 4. They’d pitched me the season. Um, we were, you know, a couple of months out.
“I turned down a couple of jobs, including a Matthew Vaughn job. Suddenly, the plug was pulled. I’ve always been pretty practical-minded in those situations.
“Like I’m always like, yeah, ‘I’d rather do that than run it into the ground and and and end on a bad note kind of thing.'”
Cox said that it was a shock to him when the reboot Born Again was pitched by Marvel, but this was not the case for his co-star Vincent D’Onofrio (Wilson Fisk aka Kingpin in the show), who was convinced from the start that this would happen. Cox went on:
“Me and Vincent would speak regularly, and he’d be like, ‘No, they’re definitely going to come back.’ And I would get off the phone and say to my wife, ‘Guy’s delusional.’ Like like he’s like he’s going to be in his 80s, and he’s going to be still talking.
“He was obviously right. He was like, ‘There’s no way the show, as popular as it was, as successful as it was, there’s no way they’re not going to do something with us.’ And I and I 100% believed it was done and dusted.”
Good for D’Onofrio for seeing the greatness in the series, and knowing Marvel couldn’t let them go. Daredevil: Born Again seasons 1 and 2 are available to view on Disney+, and season 3 is expected in 2027.
