ABSOLUTE BATMAN Just Dropped a Shocking Harley Quinn and Joker Twist That Changes Everything

by · GeekTyrant

One of the biggest reasons fans have been loving Absolute Batman is that it refuses to play by the rules. Every familiar character has been reimagined in surprising ways, and just when it seemed like readers had a handle on this alternate DC Universe, the latest issue delivered one of its most shocking reveals yet.

For decades, Harley Quinn has been defined by her toxic romance with the Joker. Whether it's comics, animation, or movies, that relationship has always been at the center of her story, even as she eventually fought to break away from him and forge her own identity. But Absolute Batman has completely rewritten that history in a way few people could've seen coming.

Instead of making Harley the Joker's former girlfriend, the series reveals she may actually be his daughter.

That's the huge twist revealed in Absolute Batman #22, "The Crooked House," written by Scott Snyder with artwork by guest artist Werther Dell'Edera. The issue jumps between the present and Harley's past as she finally shares her history with Bruce Wayne.

Harley explains that she was raised by her single mother, a neurologist who once worked for Joker-owned J.K. Holdings. Her mother eventually turned against the company and became determined to expose what it was really doing. Harley grew up never knowing her father, though she began exchanging letters with him as a teenager.

When the day finally arrived for them to meet in person, everything fell apart. Harley discovered her mother had fallen under the Joker's control and was using her surgical expertise inside the horrifying Ark M facility to create monstrous experiments. Desperate to escape, Harley ran to meet the father she'd been waiting for.

Waiting for her was Jack Grimm… The Joker. It's an absolutely wild reinvention of Harley's origin that flips more than 30 years of DC history upside down. Instead of the Joker manipulating Harley into becoming his partner, this version turns that twisted connection into a family relationship, making their dynamic even more disturbing.

The reveal also reworks one of Harley's most iconic stories. Fans will immediately recognize echoes of “Mad Love,” the classic origin story created by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm, where psychiatrist Harleen Quinzel falls for the Joker while treating him at Arkham Asylum.

In Absolute Batman, many of those familiar story beats belong to Harley's mother instead. Grimm even refers to her as "Pudding," the affectionate nickname longtime fans associate with Harley.

It's a clever inversion that almost feels like this version of Harley was born from the classic Joker and Harley relationship, only to reject both of her parents and everything they represent.

The story also connects several pieces of the larger Absolute Batman mythology. Harley's mother is revealed to be Dr. Arkham, the surgeon responsible for experimenting on Bruce during his imprisonment at Ark M back in issue #10. That detail gives the earlier storyline an entirely new layer now that readers know how closely Harley's past is tied to the Joker's world.

The flashbacks also reveal Harley never accepted Jack Grimm as her father. She fled from both of her parents, which helps explain how she eventually ended up living among the Red Hood Gang.

In this universe, Harley leads the anarchist group, which has surprisingly become one of Batman's allies. She even helped Batman defeat Bane in issue #14 and has recently been working alongside Alfred Pennyworth as part of Batman's support team.

By the time the story returns to the present, Harley seems less concerned with whether Grimm's claims are actually true than with refusing to let them define her.

That's exactly why she's trying to explain everything to Bruce, who has recently discovered that both the Joker and Scarecrow may have been manipulating the events of his entire life, including his father's murder and the path that ultimately turned him into Batman.

Unfortunately, Bruce doesn't really hear her. The issue closes with Harley sitting alone, repeating to herself: "Even if it's true, even if it's not true..."

It's a powerful ending. Harley has already decided that whatever Jack Grimm says about her past doesn't have to control who she becomes.

Meanwhile, Batman is still struggling with the possibility that his entire life has been shaped by someone else's plan. Harley may actually have the perspective Bruce needs, but he walks away before she can fully get through to him.

That's what makes this reveal so effective. It's much more than a shocking family secret. It completely reshapes Harley Quinn's place in the Absolute Batman universe while adding another emotional thread to Bruce's ongoing battle with the Joker.

If Snyder keeps finding ways to reinvent classic Batman mythology like this, it's going to be fascinating to see what other surprises are waiting around the corner.
