Paul Bettany Reveals What Happened On the Brutal Day the Stars of AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Found Out Who Lived and Who Died
by Jessica Fisher · GeekTyrantMany Marvel fans are reliving the trauma of Thanos and the snap before we head into Avengers: Doomsday this December. Avengers Endgame: Encore hit theatres last month, and it took us right back to the time between the snap, when half of humanity was erased in Avengers: Infinity War, and when the Avengers restored it.
As always, the stars of the film had to keep this huge surprise under wraps ahead of the Infinity War release, but we haven’t really heard about how the stars themselves found out who was going to disappear with the snap, and who was going to remain. Now, while making the rounds to promote his Marvel series VisionQuest, star Paul Bettany revealed what that day on set looked like.
In a video from Marvel's Instagram, Bettany recalled the wild way the cast found out who was being killed off, saying:
“I want you to imagine we've all been taken into this bus to look at this thing that they call PreVis, which is previsualization of what this final battle is going to be. And it's where people discovered if they were going to live or die.”
That sounds pretty intense, but I actually think it’s pretty cool that they got to find out together. Most people find out the fate of their character in a movie or TV show by reading the script at home, but Marvel has to do things a little differently. These people have created such bonds together, I think it’s fitting that they saw it all go down for the first time side by side.
Bettany went on to add: “We go into this bus and I'm watching and go 'Oh, I die!' And then The Russos come up to us, me and Lizzie and said 'We've gone back and forth on this dialogue and we just don't think it's working. So could you just improvise it?'“
The scene between Vision and Wanda in which he asks her to remove his mind stone to simultaneously kill him and save the universe from Thanos’ plan is one of the most heartbreaking, and to know it was improvised just speaks volumes to the incredible acting ability of Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen.
While Bettany’s Vision did die in that film, he was reanimated via hex by Wanda in WandaVision, and was then turned into White Vision by S.W.O.R.D. We are now following his journey in the series VisionQuest, which you can watch on Disney+.
