James Cameron Teases Possible ALIENS 3D Re-Release as Tech Finally Catches Up

by · GeekTyrant

It looks like James Cameron might be gearing up to bring one of sci-fi’s most intense sequels back to theaters in a whole new way. The director is kicking around the idea of converting Aliensinto 3D, and it sounds like the kind of project that could give fans a fresh reason to revisit LV-426.

During a recent chat with Letterboxd, James Cameron opened up about the possibility of upgrading the 1986 classic. He said, "We are thinking about converting Aliens [to 3D], because I know now that the tools are so much better than they were for creating depth maps. We're probably going to wind up converting Aliens, which will be a fun experience."

That’s a pretty exciting prospect considering Cameron’s track record with 3D. This is the filmmaker who pushed the format into the mainstream with Avatar and continued refining it through its sequels. If anyone knows how to make 3D feel immersive instead of gimmicky, it’s him.

Aliens, which followed Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley back into the nightmare after the events of Ridley Scott’s Alien, has held its ground as one of the greatest action sci-fi films ever made. The cast, including Michael Biehn and Lance Henriksen, helped turn it into something that still hits just as hard today.

Cameron reflected on that staying power, saying, "That film seems to be evergreen. People still go back to it a lot. If people remember a movie that I did 38 years ago, I think I've already won [an] argument."

He’s not wrong. I watch it all the time! I love that movie! Aliens has also never really faded from the conversation. It’s constantly being rediscovered, rewatched, and quoted by fans across generations.

A 3D version could give fans a new angle on the chaos, while pulling in audiences who’ve never experienced it on the big screen.

This wouldn’t be Cameron’s first time revisiting his earlier work either. He previously brought Titanic and Terminator 2: Judgment Day back to theaters with 3D conversions, both of which showed how much care he puts into reworking these films rather than just re-releasing them.

There’s no official timeline yet for when Aliens might make its return in 3D, but it’ll be cool to experience the film on the big screen again in a new way.
