Kit Harington Is Ready to Revisit Jon Snow and Says a GAME OF THRONES Sequel Series Could Work

Four years after a Jon Snow sequel series first entered development, Kit Harington sounds a lot more open to returning to Westeros.

The Game of Thrones star previously stepped away from the proposed spin-off after the team struggled to find a story worth telling. Now, after spending some time away from Jon Snow and taking on other projects, Harington says he can imagine a version of the series that actually works.

Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Harington explained that his relationship with Jon and the world of Game of Thrones has changed.

"I still think there’s a world in which something could work. I wouldn’t have gone into it in the first place if I didn’t. Now I’ve gone and done all these other things, and now I feel more comfortable with that character and that world again and where it sits in my life."

That’s quite a shift from where things stood a couple of years ago. The Jon Snow spin-off entered development in 2022 and was worked on for roughly two years. The original story would have picked up after the Game of Thrones finale, with Jon living in exile beyond the Wall.

It wasn’t exactly going to be a cheerful reunion with an old favorite. Jon would have been broken and alone, separated from his direwolf Ghost and without his sword Longclaw.

In 2024, Harington revealed that the series had been scrapped because the story wasn't "exciting enough," while HBO reportedly felt the concept was too downbeat.

Harington says everyone involved understood from the beginning that there was no point in making a Jon Snow series simply because they could.

"I was very insistent at the start, as was HBO and [George R.R. Martin]. Like, 'If we don’t find the right thing, let’s not do it. It’s much better if we don’t.' After a little while of thinking about it, it kind of was me. [I said], 'This isn’t quite the right [story].'"

Earlier this year, Drops of God writer Quoc Dang Tran joined the project, and reports suggest the concept has been reworked considerably. Instead of keeping Jon isolated beyond the Wall, the new version is reportedly set in Essos and could bring his sister Arya Stark into the story.

That sounds like a very different direction for the sequel, and Harington being more comfortable with Jon again certainly makes the possibility of his return more interesting.

Harington also has another major fantasy role lined up. He’s been cast as Defense Against the Dark Arts professor Gilderoy Lockhart in Season 2 of HBO’s Harry Potter series.

It won’t be his first encounter with Lockhart, either. Harington previously voiced the character for Audible’s Full Cast Audio editions of the Harry Potter books. The actor has also talked about how the books helped him through a difficult period while dealing with sobriety.

As for playing the hilariously self-obsessed Lockhart, Harington joked, "Lockhart is addicted to himself… It’s just a tiny step to my left [for me]."

Whether the Jon Snow sequel series ultimately makes it to HBO remains to be seen, but the situation is certainly more interesting than it was when it was first teased.

If they’ve finally found the right story, it would be pretty cool to see Jon Snow back in action.
