David Corenswet’s Superman Reportedly Safe as Paramount-Warner Bros. Merger Moves Forward

by · GeekTyrant

The Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery merger is barreling toward Hollywood, and some DC fans are wondering what happens to Superman and the DCU.

James Gunn’s DCU is still young, with only two movies and three TV shows released so far, which has naturally raised questions about how much of the current plan will survive once new ownership takes control.

Gunn has reportedly already met with Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison, who is said to be interested in keeping him around. But even if the DCU eventually gets reshaped, it sounds like David Corenswetmay be sticking around as the Man of Steel.

According to Jeff Sneider’s The InSneider newsletter, Paramount wants Corenswet to continue playing Superman and reportedly hopes to keep him in the cape through at least the end of the decade.

That should come as some relief to DC fans who have already watched one Superman get caught in a major regime change. Henry Cavill briefly returned to the role before Gunn and Peter Safran launched their new DC plans and moved forward with a different Superman.

Corenswet is now firmly established as the new face of the character. After leading Superman and appearing in Supergirl, he’s also got Man of Tomorrow, which is scheduled for 2027.

Even if Paramount eventually decides to tear apart portions of Gunn’s larger DCU plan, the new report suggests Corenswet himself isn’t viewed as something that needs fixing.

There’s another reason Ellison may want to hang onto him, and it goes beyond the cape. Before Corenswet returns as Superman, he’ll star as John Tuggle in the upcoming Paramount sports drama Mr. Irrelevant.

The film tells the story of Tuggle, the final player selected in the 1983 NFL Draft, and early reports surrounding the movie have been extremely positive.

Mr. Irrelevant has reportedly earned some of the highest test screening scores in Paramount history. The movie is currently scheduled to hit theaters around Christmas, putting Corenswet front and center in a completely different kind of role.

If the response carries over to general audiences, Paramount could have something pretty damn valuable on its hands. Corenswet wouldn’t simply be the actor playing Superman. He could become a major movie star who also happens to play Superman.

That makes keeping him around a pretty easy piece of corporate math. The impending Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery merger has already become one of Hollywood’s biggest stories of the year.

The industry is bracing for another round of consolidation, despite Ellison’s assurances about the future, and major changes will almost certainly follow once the companies officially come together.

For DC, the big mystery remains just how much control Gunn and Peter Safran will retain and whether the current DCU roadmap will continue as planned. Gunn has spent years building an interconnected universe from the ground up, so another major corporate shakeup arriving this early in the process isn’t exactly ideal timing.

Corenswet, however, appears to have some protection from whatever comes next. So while the future of James Gunn’s DCU could still change dramatically under Paramount, Superman himself may survive the corporate chaos.

At least somebody in Metropolis appears to have some job security.
