A Killer Penis Goes on a Psychosexual Rampage in the Insane Horror Film ASTROLATRY
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantIndie horror never really runs out of strange ideas, and the upcoming film project Astrolatry is going to take things to a bonkers level of strange.
This upcoming film takes a concept that sounds completely unhinged and turns it into something that’s part psychological breakdown, part creature horror, and part pitch-black satire.
The story revolves around a severed penis going on a psychosexual killing spree, but there’s more going on here than pure shock value.
The title itself pulls from the idea of worshipping celestial bodies, but the film flips that notion into something much more grounded and disturbing. Instead of looking to the stars, Astrolatry focuses on obsession, identity, and the warped mindset of its central character.
The story follows a chronic masturbator whose fixation on a beauty cream model spirals into violent delusion. That downward trajectory eventually leads to an accidental castration, and from there, things get even more bizarre as his severed penis takes on a life of its own.
Writer-director David Gordon isn’t just leaning into the absurdity. He’s aiming for something layered beneath the chaos. He describes the project as “part psychological thriller, part creature feature, and a ‘modern reimagining of Maniac, directed by Ken Russell.”
Gordon also says there’s a thematic core driving all the madness. He explains that the film “seeks to satirize the ‘nice guy’ trope and toxic masculinity by positioning them as parallel phenomena both leading to the objectification of others.”
That idea reframes the film from just being outrageous to something more pointed, using its extreme premise to poke at very real social behaviors.
The cast includes Ethan Daniel Corbett, Milena Abilova, Isabel Fugatt, Aaron Groben, Michael Mau, Christine Schlehuber, and Kristin Lorenz, bringing this strange and unsettling story to life.
Gordon is wearing multiple hats on the project as well, handling directing, cinematography, editing, and producing duties for his feature debut.
Astrolatry is set to make an appearance at the Cannes Festival Frontières Platform as part of the Buyers Showcase running May 16-17, which should give it a solid spotlight among genre fans and industry insiders looking for something different.
This is the kind of movie that will either completely repel you or pull you in out of sheer curiosity. Either way, Astrolatry isn’t playing it safe.
