VISIONQUEST Posters Spotlight Vision, Ultron, and Speed as Ultron’s Sinister Plan Is Revealed

Marvel’s VisionQuest is getting closer to its Disney+ premiere, and a trio of new posters puts Vision, Ultron, and Speed front and center.

More importantly, new details from the series reveal exactly what Ultron is trying to accomplish, and it brings his original plan from Avengers: Age of Ultron back into play in a pretty wild way.

With less than a month until the series arrives, Marvel Studios has released three character posters that spotlight Paul Bettany’s Vision, James Spader’s Ultron, and Ruaridh Mollica’s Thomas Shepard, aka Speed. The posters offer a fresh look at the major players in what serves as the final chapter of the WandaVision trilogy.

We’ve known for a while that Vision’s internal world would be populated by familiar artificial intelligence programs from across the MCU. Now, new details from ScreenRant’s set visit reveal that VisionQuest will introduce the so-called “AI Avengers” inside Vision’s Mindscape.

F.R.I.D.A.Y., E.D.I.T.H., J.A.R.V.I.S., and other AI personalities are part of Vision’s programming, each helping him understand his identity and what it means to be human. Unfortunately for Vision, Ultron is also in there, and he has much bigger plans than offering existential advice.

According to the report, Ultron manages to seize control of Vision’s physical body in the real world. That’s a nasty development considering this is essentially what Ultron wanted all the way back in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. More than a decade later, he finally gets what he was after.

ScreenRant describes one scene: “The scene included the AIs trying to break free from a lock placed upon them by Ultron, who is in control of Vision's body in the real world. Each of them has different things to do in this scene, from FRIDAY emphasising her security protocols by stating that taking down Ultron's firewall to fight him on the outside is a mistake.”

The report continues: “EDITH, as more of an over-the-top, impulsive AI, criticizes this, pushing Vision to take the fight to Ultron. After this, Vision discovers what Ultron is doing on the outside, as well as information about the mysterious Paladin.”

Ultron running around in Vision’s body while Vision and the other AIs are trapped inside his Mindscape sounds like a fun way to bring Spader’s villain back into the MCU. It also gives VisionQuest a direct connection to Age of Ultron rather than simply reviving the character for another round.

Then there’s Tommy Maximoff. Mollica plays Thomas Shepard, the mysterious young man who may be the reincarnated son of Vision and Scarlet Witch. Marvel Comics fans know Tommy as Speed, but Mollica refused to reveal whether audiences will actually see the character unleash his superspeed in VisionQuest.

The story finds Vision rebooted and hiding after escaping those who wanted to turn him into a weapon. While searching for meaning, he begins consulting the AI personalities embedded within his programming, including F.R.I.D.A.Y., E.D.I.T.H., J.A.R.V.I.S., and Ultron.

His attempt at staying out of sight falls apart when a bounty is placed on his head, forcing him on the run with Thomas Shepard. Vision must figure out who Thomas really is while dealing with those hunting him and fighting Ultron’s growing influence.

VisionQuest could also have some major consequences for the larger MCU. Aside from Daredevil: Born Again Season 3, it’s the only upcoming live-action Marvel Television series currently on the way.

The cast also includes Todd Stashwick, T'Nia Miller, Lauren Morais, Orla Brady, Diane Morgan, Polly Frame, Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, Emily Hampshire, and James D'Arcy.

The series is directed by Christopher J. Byrne, Gandja Monteiro, Vincenzo Natali, and Terry Matalas. Matalas created the Marvel Comics adaptation for television and writes alongside Cindy Appel, Christopher Monfette, Nicole Falsetti, and Matthew Okumura.

VisionQuest premieres October 14 on Disney+.
