Channing Tatum’s Gambit Has a New Accent in AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY Dunkin’ Commercial Featuring H.E.R.B.I.E.
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantChanning Tatum is bringing Gambit back for Marvel’sAvengers: Doomsday, and it looks like the card-throwing mutant has made a few adjustments since we last saw him. Most notably, his Cajun accent is a whole lot easier to understand this time around.
Fans got their first taste of Gambit’s updated voice in a Dunkin’ Donuts commercial featuring the X-Men character alongside the Fantastic Four’s charming robot assistant, H.E.R.B.I.E.
In the commercial, H.E.R.B.I.E. gives Gambit a quick lesson on incursions, the dangerous phenomenon that occurs when two or more universes collide. It's a pretty important concept heading into Avengers: Doomsday, and apparently, Dunkin’ is getting in on the multiverse action.
"Doomsday is here, mon ami," Gambit declares in his familiar Cajun drawl. The difference is that you can actually understand what he's saying without needing subtitles.
That's a noticeable change from Deadpool & Wolverine, where Tatum's ridiculously thick accent was part of the joke. Gambit spoke so fast and mumbled his words so heavily that even Deadpool struggled to figure out what the hell he was saying.
It was hilarious in that movie, but the toned-down accent makes sense for Avengers: Doomsday, where Gambit will presumably have a more substantial role alongside the other Marvel heroes. The character can still have his Cajun personality without making every conversation a guessing game.
It's also cool to see Tatum finally getting another shot at Gambit after spending so many years trying to bring the character to the big screen.
The actor was originally attached to star in a standalone Gambit movie, but the project spent years in development before eventually being canceled. Tatum, who grew up in Mississippi, has had a personal connection to the character for years, so finally getting to play him in Deadpool & Wolverine was a big deal.
That movie introduced Gambit as one of the forgotten Marvel characters trapped in the Void, alongside several familiar faces from previous superhero films. While his fate initially seemed uncertain, a deleted scene showed him escaping as the Void was being destroyed, leaving the door open for his return.
Now he's officially joining the X-Men in Avengers: Doomsday, and it'll be interesting to see how Tatum's version of the character fits into a much larger Marvel story.
Personally, I enjoyed the absurdity of Gambit's accent in Deadpool & Wolverine, but I'm fine with the fact that they're dialing it back a bit. The joke worked perfectly for that film, but Gambit deserves a chance to be more than comic relief.
It's pretty funny that our first look at this updated version of the character comes from a Dunkin' commercial with H.E.R.B.I.E., but here we are.
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
