Naughty Dog Confirms Two New THE LAST OF US Projects Are in The Works

Naughty Dog isn’t finished withThe Last of Us. Not even close. The studio wrapped up its 2026 The Last of Us Day celebration with some pretty exciting news, confirming that two new projects set within the post-apocalyptic franchise are now in the early stages of development.

On top of that, Naughty Dog finally gave fans an idea of when they’ll see more of its mysterious sci-fi game Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.

Every September 26, Naughty Dog celebrates The Last of Us Day, which marks Outbreak Day within the games. September 26, 2013 is when the Cordyceps infection began spreading rapidly across the world, kicking off the apocalypse that eventually became the backdrop for Joel and Ellie’s story.

This year’s celebration ended with Neil Druckmann teasing where Naughty Dog plans to take the franchise next. While he didn’t reveal exactly what the two projects are, he confirmed that both will push the canon beyond The Last of Us Part I and The Last of Us Part II.

Druckmann said: “We have a couple of very exciting new projects in very early stages – so we can’t say much about them at this point. I will tell you that both projects will expand the canon of The Last of Us beyond Part I and Part II.

“The world of The Last of Us means a great deal to us, and we wouldn’t return to it unless we had something meaningful to say. We believe these stories are worth telling.”

That opens up plenty of possibilities, but Naughty Dog isn’t saying whether either project is a video game. Druckmann also didn’t confirm The Last of Us Part III, so there’s no reason to assume one of these projects is the long-awaited sequel.

What we do know is that Naughty Dog has two new The Last of Us stories in development, and both will add to the established universe beyond the first two games.

As for Naughty Dog’s next major game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, fans are going to have to wait a little longer before getting a proper look at it.

The sci-fi adventure was originally revealed on December 12, 2024, and Naughty Dog has kept it largely out of sight ever since. It was also absent from the September 2026 State of Play presentation, continuing the studio’s lengthy stretch without showing new footage.

Druckmann explained that Naughty Dog needs “to cook for just a little bit longer,” but he also confirmed that the wait for a full reveal ends in 2027.

He wrote: “So we want to set expectations: we’re going to be quiet for the rest of this year. In 2027, that changes. We’ll fully reveal Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet and give you a proper look at Jordan’s wild sci-fi adventure.

“We know it’s been a long time since we’ve had much to share with you. We don’t take your continued support for granted. We’re working incredibly hard to make something worthy of your patience.”

That means Naughty Dog fans shouldn’t expect any more major Intergalactic reveals during the remainder of 2026. The studio plans to pull back the curtain in 2027 and finally show what Jordan’s sci-fi adventure actually has in store.

Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet still doesn’t have a release date, so the 2027 reveal doesn’t necessarily mean the game will launch that year.

Between a full Intergalactic reveal and two mysterious The Last of Us projects now taking shape, Naughty Dog has several big things cooking. The real question is what those two projects turn out to be, because until Naughty Dog says otherwise, The Last of Us Part III remains unconfirmed.
