MAYDAY Trailer Throws Ryan Reynolds Into a Cold War Escape With Kenneth Branagh and It Looks Like a Blast!

Apple TV has dropped the first trailer for Mayday, and it looks like it's bringing together explosive action, sharp comedy, and an unlikely friendship in the middle of the Cold War.

With Ryan Reynoldsand Kenneth Branagh leading the charge, this buddy comedy looks like it's going to deliver plenty of laughs alongside its high-stakes action.

The trailer introduces Reynolds as fighter pilot Troy Kelly, whose mission goes spectacularly wrong, leaving him stranded behind enemy lines. Captured by Branagh's Nikolai Ustinov, Kelly wakes up in a situation that only gets stranger when his captor cheerfully explains that he had to perform emergency surgery on him with very little anesthesia.

That awkward introduction turns out to be just the beginning. Rather than being a ruthless enemy officer, Ustinov is an ex-KGB agent with an unexpected fascination for American culture.

He's convinced he'd love McDonald's if he ever had the chance to try it, and before long, he and Kelly form an unlikely alliance. Together, they're forced to outrun the Red Army as they make a desperate escape across hostile territory.

The trailer leans into the chemistry between Reynolds and Branagh, and it works. Reynolds brings his trademark fast-talking charm while Branagh looks like he's having an absolute blast playing a Soviet officer with an oddly enthusiastic appreciation for all things American.

Their back-and-forth looks like it'll be the heart of the movie, even as bullets start flying and explosions light up the screen.

The supporting cast includes Marcin Dorocinski, Maria Bakalova, and David Morse, adding even more talent to an already impressive lineup.

There's plenty of firepower behind the production as well. The film comes from the producers of Deadpool & Wolverine, while Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves filmmakers John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein are directing and producing.

That creative team makes this feel like a perfect match for an action comedy built around big set pieces, fast-paced humor, and charismatic leads.

Apple TV is also bringing Mayday to this year's San Diego Comic-Con, where it'll be one of the streamer's featured projects. It wouldn't be surprising if fans got an extended look at the film during the convention.

Based on this first trailer, Mayday looks like a wildly entertaining ride packed with action, laughs, and the kind of odd-couple pairing that's hard to resist. Reynolds and Branagh seem to be having a great time together.

Mayday premieres on Apple TV on September 4.
