Kit Harington Says Jon Snow Spin-Off Is on Hold, But He Still Feels There’s More Story to Tell

Fans hoping to see Jon Snow ride back onto HBO anytime soon will need to keep waiting. Still, it sounds like the door to the frozen North hasn’t completely closed.

During an appearance at Motor City Comic Con, Kit Harington opened up about the status of the long-discussed Game of Thronesspin-off centered on Jon Snow, and while the project isn’t moving forward right now, he admitted there’s still part of him that believes the character has unfinished business.

The spin-off was first announced back in 2022 and immediately got fans talking. Jon Snow was one of the biggest characters in Game of Thrones, and the idea of continuing his story beyond the events of the series finale felt like an obvious move for HBO.

Then updates stopped coming, and many assumed the project had quietly faded away. Earlier this year though, a report claimed the series might still be alive in some form, with rumors even hinting at Arya Stark returning.

Now Harington has offered an update, and it sounds like the project is sitting in limbo for now. He explained: "It's open knowledge that we tried to make a Jon Snow show for a little while, and just couldn't."

Harington went on to explain that revisiting Jon Snow isn’t something he wants to do unless the story genuinely earns it:

"My main thing is not wanting to go there and sort of do an injustice by the character. As I've just said, I think he ended well. I think that he went where he was meant to. So, if you pick him up again, it needs to be for the right reasons.

"But I did feel there was something left to say, and I did think the idea of exploring something kind of entirely around him, or a lot around him, would be interesting.

“Because remember in Game of Thrones, you're part of a huge ensemble, and it would be quite interesting to look at a character dive more focused on [him]. And that's why I was intrigued, but we couldn't find the right thing, and so we put it down for the moment."

Honestly, that’s probably the smartest approach HBO could take with the character. Jon Snow already got a pretty fitting ending in Game of Thrones. Sending him back beyond the Wall felt like the closest thing the series had to peace for him after years of war, betrayal, death, and discovering his incredibly awkward family tree.

At the same time, Harington’s comments make it clear he still sees potential there. A more focused character-driven story following Jon after the fall of Westeros could’ve been interesting, especially without constantly juggling dozens of major characters and political storylines.

Whether HBO eventually cracks the right concept is another story entirely. For now, the next trip back to Westeros will come with House of the Dragon Season 3, which premieres on HBO on June 21.

Fans may not be getting more Jon Snow anytime soon, but it definitely doesn’t sound like Harington has fully shut the gate on returning someday.
